THE PROCESS
Our landscaping work is tree-centered — design and planting that accounts for what the trees and plants will look like and need at maturity, not just on installation day. Here is how we approach it.
An ISA Certified Arborist and landscape professional walks your property with you. We look at existing trees and their root zones, soil type and drainage, sun exposure at different times of day, water access, and how you use the space. This shapes what we recommend — not a catalog of whatever is available at the nursery this week.
You receive a written design with each plant and tree specified by species, placement, mature size, and the reason it fits that location. We do not plant fast-growing species under power lines, root-invasive species against structures, or drought-sensitive species in Oahu's drier zones without clear irrigation provision. The rationale is in writing so you can review it before anything is ordered.
We install to the same standards as our dedicated tree planting service. Correct hole preparation, root-flare depth management, native soil backfill, proper watering in, and mulch placement kept away from trunks. If the site has existing irrigation, we integrate with it. If it does not, we discuss a watering plan before planting rather than after.
All installed plants and trees come with written first-season care instructions. We schedule a follow-up visit at three to six months to assess establishment. If anything is struggling, we assess and advise — whether the issue is watering, drainage, pest pressure, or a species mismatch we need to correct.
One honest thing we say about landscaping: most problems we see on Oahu residential properties are the result of the wrong species in the wrong place — something that looked manageable at two feet tall and is now a structural or maintenance problem at twenty. We would rather slow down the design conversation than plant something that creates an expensive problem in five years.

Larger-caliper tree installations and shrub placement as part of a landscape design or as standalone additions. All installations include site assessment, species confirmation, and correct planting depth and technique. Large specimens requiring equipment access are coordinated as part of the project scope.
Annual maintenance programs for installed landscapes — scheduled pruning, mulch replenishment, pest and disease monitoring, and condition assessment. Program clients receive written visit reports and priority scheduling. Common for HOA communities and commercial properties in Kaneohe (96744) and Hawaii Kai (96825).
THE MOST EXPENSIVE LANDSCAPING MISTAKE ON OAHU
Oahu's growing conditions — warm, humid, and with minimal frost — allow almost anything to survive initially. The problem is what those plants look like at maturity. Fast-growing tropical species planted near structures, albizia planted anywhere near a building or power line, root-invasive species planted against a concrete driveway or wall — all of these are visible maintenance and structural problems within a decade.
Native Hawaiian and traditional Polynesian-introduced species are consistently better choices for Oahu properties. They are adapted to local conditions, less likely to become invasive problems, and generally better-behaved at maturity in terms of root spread and structural integrity. We make the species case in writing before anything is planted.

Landscaping is a maintenance and improvement service and is not covered by homeowner's insurance as a standalone. However, if installed plants or trees cause property damage — a tree falls on a structure, roots damage a neighbor's wall — liability exposure depends on the species planted and its known risk profile. We document species selection rationale and installation standards for every job.
For HOA properties, landscaping changes in common areas typically require board approval. We can provide species documentation, mature-size specifications, and design drawings in formats suitable for board review. Some Oahu neighborhoods near conservation districts have restrictions on planting certain non-native species — we check applicable restrictions before finalizing any design.
Landscaping cost depends on the project scope — number of plants and trees, site preparation required, and whether irrigation integration is included. A small front-yard renovation is a different budget than a full property design and install. We give you a written design with an itemized install price before any plants are purchased. It depends on your site. Wetter properties in Manoa and Kaneohe support a wide range of tropical species. Drier Hawaii Kai and Ewa properties need drought-tolerant selection. For all sites, we prioritize native Hawaiian and traditional Polynesian-introduced species where appropriate — they perform better long-term and create fewer future problems.
Yes. If existing planting is overgrown, species-mismatched, or causing structural problems, we can assess, remove, and replace as part of a redesign. We assess whether existing trees and larger shrubs are worth keeping before recommending removal — sometimes a well-placed mature plant is worth designing around rather than replacing.
We integrate with existing irrigation systems and can advise on irrigation needs for installed plants. For new irrigation system design and installation, we coordinate with a licensed irrigation contractor. Water access is assessed before the design is finalized — planting without confirming the irrigation plan is a common cause of establishment failure.
Most landscape plantings are visually established within one growing season — six to twelve months. Full establishment of the root system for trees and larger shrubs takes 12–24 months. The first year is the critical period for watering and monitoring. We provide written care instructions and schedule a follow-up visit at three to six months for all installed landscapes.
