Honolulu averages 15–20 mph trade winds year-round, with gusts well above that during Kona wind events. Routine pruning is maintenance — and maintenance is not covered by standard homeowner's insurance. However, if a limb has already caused damage to your roof, fence, or a neighbor's structure, your dwelling coverage may pay for the debris removal and repairs. The key word is "already caused." A branch you knew was dangerous but did not prune is a pre-existing condition — some carriers will deny a claim on those grounds.

The response is a flush of weakly attached water sprouts right at the cut sites, which are more likely to fail in a storm than the original branches were. ANSI A300 explicitly prohibits topping. We never top trees. If a tree is too tall, the correct approach is a size reduction to a lateral branch — which looks far better and keeps the tree structurally sound.

For most hardwood species — monkeypod, banyan, African tulip — Oahu's drier months (roughly April through October) allow cut sites to heal with less fungal risk from rain. Fruit trees like mango and lychee should be pruned based on their fruiting cycle, not the calendar. Hazard pruning — dead limbs, storm-damaged branches — is done immediately regardless of season.
