STUMP GRINDING · HONOLULU, HI · OAHU
After a tree comes down, the stump left behind is not just an eyesore. On Oahu, leftover stumps attract termites, harbor fungal root rot that can spread to neighboring trees, and create tripping hazards in yards where kids play or landscaping crews work. Grinding removes the problem without the cost and disruption of full stump extraction.
Our grinders reduce the stump and surface roots to wood chips 6 to 12 inches below grade — deep enough to sod, replant, or pave over. We work in tight Kaimuki side yards, Hawaii Kai pool decks, and wide-open Pearl City lots. If equipment access is a concern, we assess it during the free estimate.
If you need the root system fully extracted — for a driveway pour or deep planting — that is a different scope. We will tell you honestly which option your site requires.

THE PROCESS
Stump grinding removes the visible stump and grinds the wood below grade. Here is exactly what happens on every job from first call to finished yard.
We come to your property and assess the stump's diameter, wood hardness, and any buried obstacles (concrete, utility lines, irrigation). You get an exact written price before we schedule. No phone-only quotes — stump size and site access determine the job, and we need to see it.
Our stump grinder works the stump down to 6–12 inches below grade — deep enough for lawn re-establishment or paving. We work in overlapping passes across the full diameter including any large surface roots. Tight Hawaii Kai pool decks, Pearl City carports, and Kaimuki side yards where large equipment cannot access are handled with our compact grinder.
The grinding process produces wood chip material. We can backfill the cavity with the chips and leave the area ready to top with soil and seed — or we haul everything away and leave the cavity open for you to fill. Tell us before the job starts which you prefer. Haul-away is included if you want the cavity cleared.
Once grinding is complete, the surface is raked level. The remaining subsurface chips will decompose over 12–18 months. For immediate paving or pool deck work, we recommend full root excavation rather than grinding — and we will tell you that honestly if your project requires it.
One thing we always say honestly: stump grinding removes the stump to below grade, but the root system remains in the ground and decomposes naturally over several years. If you need the full root system removed — for new construction, a pool, or a concrete pour over the area — root excavation is the right service, not grinding. We tell you which applies during the free assessment.

WHAT WE HANDLE
Every stump job is scoped on-site. Species, size, and access all affect the approach — we assess before quoting.
Most calls come from Oahu homeowners who had a tree removed and are left with a stump in the way. We work in tight yards, alongside fences, near garden beds, and in spaces where a large grinder cannot fit. Common in Kaimuki (96816), Pearl City (96782), and Hawaii Kai (96825).
Commercial properties and HOA communities need stumps cleared for liability, appearance, and landscaping requirements. We provide COI and written documentation as standard on every commercial job. Multi-stump jobs quoted and completed in a single scheduled visit.
Large surface roots from banyan, monkeypod, and other Oahu species can extend well beyond the stump and create trip hazards or damage hardscape. We grind surface roots to below grade in the same visit as the stump.
If a tree has been removed urgently — storm damage, HECO line clearance — and you need the stump cleared quickly, we offer same-day availability across all of Oahu. Call us. For active storm situations, see our emergency tree service.
WHY STUMPS ARE NOT JUST AN EYESORE
Untreated stumps from certain Oahu species — particularly albizia, monkeypod, and African tulip — will sprout aggressively from the root system. Multiple shoots can emerge within weeks of the original removal and grow rapidly. Grinding destroys the stump's sprouting capacity in most cases.
Rotting stumps also attract termites, carpenter ants, and other wood-boring insects — common problems in Oahu's climate. A stump that is close to your home's foundation creates a pest bridge. Grinding and removing the material eliminates that risk.
Get the stump out before it becomes a bigger problem.
We are available same-day across Oahu. Free on-site assessment — exact price before any work begins.
Call (808) 207-0841INSURANCE & COST
Stump grinding after a routine tree removal is not covered by standard homeowner's insurance — it is maintenance. However, if the stump is the result of a tree that fell during a storm and caused structural damage, your dwelling coverage may cover both the fallen tree removal and the stump grinding as part of the same claim.
The key is documentation. If a storm took the tree down, document the damage before any cleanup and contact your insurer before we start work. We can assist with job documentation for the claim. For immediate storm situations, call our emergency line first.
Cost depends on stump diameter, wood hardness, depth required, and site access. A single small stump in an open yard is a quick job. A large hardwood stump with extensive surface roots in a tight Kaimuki side yard is a different scope. We give you an exact written number after a free on-site visit — never a phone estimate. Most residential grinding jobs are completed in under two hours.

Stump grinding uses a mechanical grinder to reduce the stump to wood chip material 6–12 inches below grade. The root system remains in the ground and decomposes naturally over time. Stump removal (full extraction) physically removes the stump and as much of the root system as possible — more invasive, but necessary if you are building over the area or need the roots fully cleared.
In most cases, no. Grinding destroys the stump's ability to produce new growth. However, some vigorous Oahu species — albizia in particular — can produce root sprouts from the remaining root system even after the stump is ground. We advise on this during the assessment if it applies to your species.
We grind 6–12 inches below the existing grade as standard — deep enough for lawn reseeding, mulching, or standard landscaping. If you need the area paved or built over, we can grind deeper on request, though full root excavation may be more appropriate depending on the project.
Cost depends on stump diameter, wood hardness, surface root extent, and site access. We give you an exact number after a free on-site assessment — never a phone-only estimate. Most single residential stumps are completed in under two hours.
The grinding process produces a significant volume of chip material. We can backfill the cavity with chips and leave it ready for topdressing with soil — or we haul all chip material away and leave the area clear. Tell us before the job starts which you prefer. Haul-away is included in the quote.
